Despite housing the city’s much sought after IT hub and being home to a fairly large literate population, the Serilingampally division has earned dubious high alert’ tag as three candidates contesting in the GHMC elections from here have criminal records. Activists of Forum for Better Governance, a civil society organisation, have listed 12 more wards including Khairatabad, Old Bowenpally and Hafeezpet, under this category. In all, the forum has listed 46 candidates who have criminal records.
The organisation, comprising bureaucrats, judges and professors, have also put together a list of candidates with criminal records — from all the 150 wards. According to its findings, based on police records, 46 of the total 1,310 candidates in the fray, have criminal charges pending against them. Out of these, four are from Congress, nine from Telugu Desam Party, nine from Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and four from Bharatiya Janata Party. Praja Rajyam, the Left parties, others and independents put together make for another 20. “While the numbers may not be very significant, it is important for our voters to know what their candidates are like. It will help them make a better choice,” said Padmanabha Reddy, a former bureaucrat and activist.
The list of charges against these candidates range from heinous crimes like murder, attempt to murder, carrying of dangerous weapons and land grabbing and rioting. Charges of preventing public servants from discharging duties and creating nuisance during elections are also some of the charges against some candidates. According to the data, TDP’s T Raju Singh (Mangalhat) and MIM’s V Srisailam Yadav (Rahmath Nagar), have the maximum criminal charges levied against them. While Singh has several murder cases and illicit liquor charges pending against him, realtor Yadav, a rowdy sheeter, is facing several cases of cheating and land grabbing.
Ex-corporators like G Krishna Yadav (independent candidate from Khairatabad) and P Mohan Rao (independent candidate from Seethaphalmandi), also figure on this list that even includes ex-mayor and MIM candidate from Hussain Alam, Mir Zulfikar Ali. Various cases of financial fraud and physical abuse are found to be registered against them.
Apart from them, some of the other names that figure on this list are: BJP’s Jagnesh Doshi (Gunfoundry), Congress’ S K Shareef (Khairatabad), TDP’s S Srinivasa Reddy (Saidabad), MIM’s Murtaza Ali Khan (Chavni) and Farah Fathima known as Lady Don (Moulali), among others.
